Wonderful opportunity abounds for gardeners this weekend. There is the Pend Oreille Lavender Festival held just north of Newport, in Cusick,Wa., and the Coeur d’ Alene Garden Club’s annual Garden Tour. The good news is that if you plan it right, and you happen to be off work, you could do both! The garden tour is held on Sunday only, but the Lavender Festival is both Saturday and Sunday.

The Garden tour is always amazing. It is awe inspiring for the beginning and the experienced gardener, alike. On the tour, you see the possibility that exists in a garden.

You see the masterpieces your neighbors have created to their own liking. You see the art form that gardening can be. Each garden is uniquely done, and all of them are an inspiration. Unique plants and perspectives will change what you currently consider “gardening,” and give you a glimpse of what a garden can be. This tour is self-guided. When you purchase a ticket, you get a map to all of the gardens on tour. You can go to one or all of them. The Coeur d’ Alene Garden Club has done a fabulous job at making this event one you will not want to miss. It will be a day well spent.

The Pend Oreille Lavender Festival is a bit of a drive up past Newport and through Usk, to Le Clerc Creek Lavender Farm. Pack your favorite CD’s and some cold drinks and snacks for the ride, and don’t miss this wonderful destination! The Farm is to a gardener what Disneyland is to a kid. The setting is magnificent. Colorful rows of lavender lead down to the banks of a river. Artisans have tents set up selling their one of a kind items.

Food booths and tables overlooking the river make the perfect picnic. Display gardens are all over the property. Plan on taking enough time to relax and soak it all in.

If for some reason you cannot make it to one of these (2) great garden events, there is more! July 21st and 22nd are the dates for the Mountain View Farm Lavender Festival. This farm is closer, off of highway 95 near Silverwood Theme Park. The offerings here have been wonderful: vendors, demonstrations, food and drinks. (Make sure to try the Lavender Lemonade) The setting here is perfect, too. As you drive in, you see rows and rows of lavender leading to a wooden bridge. Cross the creek and enter a gardener’s paradise of great art, plants, food and fun!

Mulch: The Lazy Gardener's Best Friend

Want to save time spent weeding? How about saving water (which of course translates to saving money)? Say hello to mulch, the gardener’s best friend.

When you cover the soil with mulch it does four things. First, it acts as an insulating blanket conserving moisture and keeping the plant roots cool. Second, it keeps weeds from coming up, smothering seedlings and keeping soil soft so that the weeds that do get through are easy to pull. Third, it breaks down slowly over the year improving the soil beneath it. After five years of mulching you will be able to turn your soil with just a trowel. The fourth thing mulch will do is cover the dirt, making your beds look finished and neat.

So what is mulch? Mulch is any organic matter laid on bare dirt between plants. Ok, what is organic matter? Organic matter is something that was living. Some examples are: ground fir bark, shredded cedar, rice hulls or cocoa bean shells. The best example is homemade compost. Talk about garbage into gold! So pick your favorite material and cover that dirt.
